People always comment on how fast I can knit. And recently someone asked me how fast I knit since I get so many projects done for my Etsy shop.

So…here you go: me, knitting, fast.

(I appologize for my giggles and small, random noises.)

This lady is adorable and I looove her stuff. I wish she could teach me how to knit, since all I can do is crochet. Knitting looks so complicated to me!

In a survey of attitudes toward artists in the U.S. a vast majority of Americans, 96%, said they were greatly inspired by various kinds of art and highly value art in their lives and communities. But the data suggests a strange paradox.
While Americans value art, the end product, they do not value what artists do. Only 27% of respondents believe that artists contribute “a lot” to the good of society.

Further interview data from the study reflects a strong sentiment in the cultural community that society does not value art making as legitimate work worthy of compensation. Many perceive the making of art as a frivolous or recreational pursuit.

Other insights further illuminate the depth of the paradox:

• A majority of parents think that teaching the arts is as important as reading, math, science, history, and geography.

• 95% believe that the arts are important in preparing children for the future.

• In the face of a changing global economy, economists increasingly emphasize that the United States will have to rely on innovation, ingenuity, creativity, and analysis for its competitive edge—the very skills that can be enhanced by engagement with the arts.

Now, I realize this is ridiculous, but today my roommate and I were out Christmas shopping and moping about how we didn’t have any decorations in our apartment (and we’re kind of limited as to what we can put up, because I have a rambunctious kitten and she has a dog that likes to eat… well, everything). We now have garland in our kitchen, white lights and gold snowflakes in our living room (we also have stockings for our pets but not for ourselves, but we’ll save the crazy pet owner post for another day). And of course, there is the above photo. Which is, sadly, the first Christmas tree I’ve purchased in my adult life. It’s tiny and absolutely absurd looking, but I kind of love it. A lot.

The first two holiday presents I’ve bought and wrapped. I used C.’s art tags for gift tags (even though the first one if for her) (I screwed up cutting the wave one). I love this wrapping paper. One of the reindeer/polar bear/puppy things is making this face :-o. It’s kind of amazing.

This is a good idea. She used a typewriter to put messages on the tags. =)
